Description

This is a jar that contains one half of a mandible. This part of the mandible contains four teeth only. In place of the missing teeth the gum margin is occupied by an ulcerating mass that has an irregular outline and measures about 3 X 1.5cm in diameter. The ulcer has an everted edge and a necrotic floor. Attached to the angle of mandible there is a mass of amalgamated lymph nodes that measure about 5 X 3 cm and are is bisected to show areas of necrosis.

Some possible questions

Q. What is an epulis?

Q. What are the types of epulides?

Q. What is the histological type of this lesion?

A. Squamous cell carcinoma

Q. In general, what are the histological types of carcinomas?

A.        Squamous cell carcinoma

            Basal cell carcinoma

            Adenocarcinoma

            Transitional cell carcinoma

Q. Can this be an operative specimen, and why?

A. Yes, because the treatment of operable cases is excision of the primary lesion with a safety margin (that may amount to hemimandibulectomy) and the draining lymph nodes and the tissues inbetween, all in one mass. This is the classic concept of radical surgery.
