Description

This jar contains segments of two adjacent ribs. A mass arises from one side of a rib and is infiltrating the other one. The mass measures about 5 X 2 cm with an irregular surface with heterogeneous colour.

Diagnosis

Periosteal fibrosarcoma.

Some possible questions

Q. Why is it diagnosed as a tumour arising from the periosteum?

A. Because it expands one side of the rib only. A tumour arising from bony tissue should expand it in all directions.

Q. Why is it considered malignant?

A. It grossly infiltrates adjacent rib.
