Description

This jar contains a contracted gall bladder that is slit longitudinally to reveal a thick wall (about 4mm) and a solitary stone whose largest diameter is about 1cm. The stone has a creamy white colour and a mamillated surface. The outer surface of the gall bladder shows adhesions.

Diagnosis

Chronic calcular cholecystitis. The gall bladder has a solitary cholesterol stone.

Possible questions

Q. What are the types of gall stones and their characteristic features?

Q. What is the aetiology of gall stones?

Q. What are the possible complications of this stone?

Be careful answering this question. If you are asked specifically about this stone do not mention migration into the common bile duct and its consequences because the diameter of the stone is much bigger than that of the cystic duct.

Q. Can this be an operative specimen, and why?

A. Yes, because the standard treatment is cholecystectomy.
