C18-1 -Brown atrophy of the heart.

Specimen:

Heart with open left side.

Gross Pathology :

1.  Heart is reduced in size,( compare to the size of the aorta)

2.  The myocardium is dark brown.

3.  Coronaries (seen at the outer surface) are tortuous.

4.  Pericardial fat is replaced by edematous tissue (serous atrophy of fat).

5.  Aorta shows yellow atherosclerotic patches.

Diagnosis :

1.     Brown atrophy of the heart and serous atrophy of pericardial fat

2.    Aortic atherosclerosis.
